Is a College Degree Important in the Mass media?

I graduated with honors from a good State University. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and acquired a honorarium for my department. For the last fifteen years or so, I have performed professionally as an actor, writer and music performer. 

During all that time I cannot remember being asked about my college degree more than once or twice. 

College is fun and having a degree was never a hindrance for me to pursue my dreams. Nevertheless one could ask the question, was it worth it? 

Outside of the traditional music sphere college degrees hold very little if any water at all in the music business. Obviously, this doesn't hold much weight in the rock, hip-hop, and pop category. If you're looking for employment as a session musician, attending a well-regarded music school doesn't hurt. However it's all going to come down to how well you play, and more frequently than not, who you know. 

Securing an agent might be simpler if you have a college degree from well known theater schools like Julliard or A.C.T. However such a college degree will be completely secondary to the impact you make with your presence and your audition. Degrees can help keep you profitable when you are searching for a job as an actor. You can reassure yourself with it but what matters most are the steps you take at present. 
Even as a specialist writer my college degree has been of little impact. I mean it's listed on the resume that I utilize to attain work. I think once when I briefly kept a staff job at a dot.com back in the '90s the girl who employed me may have asked about it. Nevertheless, in writing what matters most is your performance and the individuals you know and this is the same with acting and music. 

If I can turn back time, must I spend a number of years of my life studying in order to attain a college degree? Probably not. I worked in a film alongside a very gifted guy and he was just 19 years old at that time. He'd graduated from high school and moved to Los Angeles right away. He'd been working in advertisements before I met him and after the film we did together he went on to book a starring part in a network sitcom. After several episodes he is still with the show. Certainly he made the right decision when it came to skipping college. 

A college degree is a wonderful thing to achieve. In another line of employment a college degree can act as proof of your capability to do big things. Nevertheless in some amusement related fields, a college degree might just take you out of the running during what could turn out to be your most valuable years.
