Child1st - CEO’s Vision of Publishing Special Education Resources to Help Children Learn Better
aAt Child1st we provide special education resources, sight word decodable books, sight word flash cards and many more products to help special needs children learn more easily. Child1st is uniquely designed to teach the way children learn best. Bob and Sarah Major launched the Child1st website out of their own desire to share with others some of the teaching tools that they found to be very effective with children who struggle in traditional classrooms, or with traditional teaching approaches. In the fall of 2006, Sarah resigned from full time teaching in order to devote herself to this work full time.
Both Sarah and Bob grew up overseas, children of missionary parents. Bob was born and raised in India and gained many amazing experiences travelling around the world. Sarah grew up in Central America, (Costa Rica, Honduras, and Puerto Rico), and actually began college at the University of Puerto Rico Recinto Mayaguez. Bob and Sarah have four children aged from 12 to 30 who are the delight of their lives.
Sarah has a B.A. from Wheaton College in Wheaton Ill and a M.Ed. from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI. Her teaching experience covers from preschool up to and including college level reading classes. Sarah’s focus on the design of alphabet and sight words required hundreds of hours interacting with children in order to discover the images that communicated best to them. If children suggested changes in the images, those words were redesigned.
Here is a list of products available through Child1st such as special education resources, sight word decodable books, stylized sight word flash cards, and many more. We do ask and appreciate that you honor the copyright by not making copies of the materials because of the enormous investment in time and work spent in creating these products.

At Child1st we believe every child can learn, that many learning failures are avoidable, and that a label assigned doesn’t have to be a life sentence. We believe brains are made to learn, they love to learn, and they will learn when conditions are right. At Child1st, we believe that no matter how far behind children are, the gaps in their understanding can be bridged, allowing them to catch up rapidly. Let us show you it can be done.

What is the average amount of homework for a Kindergarten student?
My son started Kindergarten this year and I'm stunned at the amount of homework he gets. I'm 39, and when I was in that grade, it was all about learning the structure of being in school, starting on the alphabet, maybe some numbers, and lots of coloring and playing. For the first quarter, the goals for my son were knowing all 52 upper and lower case letters, 60 or more "sight words" to memorize, counting forward from 1 to 20, backwards from 10 to 1, and recognizing all numbers up to 10. Also know the sounds of most of the letters of the alphabet, plus shapes, colors, writing his name, and on and on and on. On a regular basis, after 6 hours in school, I am expected to work with him on his "homework" for 2 hours. On top of that, I'm to read to him. He is the first of 3 children entering school, and I can't imagine what it's going to be like a few years from now. He comes home from school with pictures that he's colored and little things he pasted. What are they doing during class? Help!
My daughter (now in gr. 1) went 2/3 days per week. There was always 3or 4 pages of homework given. It was rediculous. She learned tonnes, but it was rediculous. You should talk to the teacher.
My son's kindergarden teacher did lots of art and music, and crafty stuff. She was awesome. Rarely was there any homework. She sent stuff ocassionally so parents would interact with their kids (like we don't do that already. My son was reading at a grade 2 level as well. Homework did not make any difference. He was far more advanced than my daughter.
